The wood elves live in scattered communities throughout the vast regions of forest in the western parts of the world. They have a handful of major cities, dozens of smaller towns around and between them, and perhaps hundreds of communities that could be packed up and moved overnight. They tend to build with the forest, not against it; the smaller the settlement, the harder it is to distinguish from the surrounding woods. While they tend to keep to themselves, they trade willingly with other races and are in constant diplomatic contact with their neighbors. Because of this, most non-elves base their idea of elves in general on the wood elves; in fact, what most humans think of as “high elves” are in fact the aristocracy of the wood elves. Their skin and hair show a variety of colors, from porcelain skin and platinum blonde to deep tan and nut-brown. Some wood elves, particularly the royal family and close kin, are “deciduous”, their hair (and sometimes skin) shifting in color with the seasons like the leaves on the trees. Those that don’t do so naturally sometimes dye their hair to match the season, particularly the upper class.
