The city of New Newportton is an independent city-state and the heart of the Grand Duchy of New Newportton. Built where the Dragontail River meets the coast, it is the major seaport of the area; with it’s hand in such a vast amount of trade, the city is remarkably wealthy, and even most commoners live in relative comfort. Most residents’ occupations are in some way related to the sea, whether it be as actual sailors, dockhands, fishers or fishmongers, general laborers in a warehouse, or providing goods or services to such.
The city itself is ruled directly by the Grand Duchess, while the surrounding areas comprising the Grand Duchy are portioned out into baronies.
Like in many port cities, the neighborhood near the docks themselves is rather rough. Sailors like to blow off steam after long, boring voyages and cram in as much fun before the next long and boring voyage. Drinking, gambling and prostitution are cornerstones of the local economy. Perhaps the most notorious dockside site is The Rusty Anchor, a tavern known for its famous patrons, epic brawls, and the availability of undiluted liquor if the barkeep likes you (this fact alone mitigates the violence and property damage more than anything else).
