The halfings, or hin as they call themselves, are loosly divided into three unofficial groups: Those that live intermixed with other races, typically humans; those that live in nomadic caravans, travelling between the major and minor cities of a region; and those that live in their own homeland, a small coastal kingdom north of New Newportton. Those that live with other races have their own neighborhoods and communities, sometimes subtly overlapping with other parts of town: one could walk right through the heart of some hin communities, and without being a part of their world might never even notice. Nomadic hin thrive by trading in their own handcrafted goods and various obscure merchandise from other lands that most “tallfolk” merchants can’t be bothered to export; if you want anything weird or unusual from a distant city, the hin can help you out. The hin of their homeland attempt to preserve the peaceful lifestyle of times past, before the more aggressive races expanded and conquered the lands they once held. While not a warlike people, they understand the necessity of a standing army, and all able-bodied adults are expected to defend their land if attacked. The aristocracy of their kingdom are very proud of their heritage, and consider “halfling” a slur; they will openly criticize any hin they see meekly tolerating the word’s use by other races.
