A smaller faction of elves far to the north, the grey elves (or Ljosalfar) allow no other races inside their borders except as slaves. They have some smaller communities south of their kingdom that are willing to deal with other races, in both trade and diplomacy; these are seen primarily as a buffer to keep outsiders from their home, even by the residents. They are largely isolationist, but are resigned to the fact that contact with other races is unavoidable and occasionally necessary. Even though they try not to make enemies without good cause, there are stories of them waging swift and bloody war without provocation, supposedly because one of their soothsayers predicting a problem from them years or even centuries in the future. These stories are hard to confirm, however; rarely has anyone on the losing side who would know survived, and the elves will not discuss such matters with outsiders. Since they think in the long term, they are infamous for slaughtering the children of their defeated enemies so as to prevent a future generation driven by revenge; since food can be scarce so far north, they have even been known to eat them. Their racial alignment is lawful evil, although lawful neutral is a common alignment among traders, diplomats and exiles who have “lightened up”. While others sometimes call them “grey elves”, their proper name means “bright elves”; they arrogantly see themselves as the pinnacle of elven society, the light from which all other elves (whom they call “svartalfar”, or “dark elves”) have turned away or been cast out. The “-ar” suffix indicates the plural (one ljosalf, two ljosalfar).
