The drow occupy a land called Nubia, a mountainous region to the south of Khem; the primary range is called “the spine of the world” in the drow tongue. In this world, the cult of Lolth was defeated early on by the combined forces of the high elves of Khem and Drow loyal to Ananaza, the true Spider Goddess (described below). As a result, they were never driven underground by the other elves or developed any deep-seated hatred of them; of course, this does not mean they always get along smoothly. Nubia is technically a conquered territory of Khem, but the drow and human inhabitants are reasonably well treated by the high elves; drow charioteers, their elite warriors, are commonly used as shock troops or temple guards. They certainly have a ruthless streak, but are not categorically evil; neither is their society dominated by one gender. They have a tendency to build homes and cities partially or mostly underground, either in natural caves or artificial tunnels, in a manner like that of the dwarves. Their racial alignment is lawful neutral, but like the high elves there is plenty of variation.
Ananaza: The chief deity of the drow, she is the goddess of spiders but is very unlike Lolth. She is lawful neutral, but does not allow evil clerics. Her domains are Artifice, Darkness, Law and Trickery. She desires to maintain order in the world, but prefers to work through guile and subtlety; forcing order onto chaos will only breed rebellion, but manipulating chaos into ordering itself is more permanent. Her favored weapon is the dagger: in addition to symbolizing a spider’s fangs, it is the preferred weapon of intrigue, both literally and figuratively.
